Wegovy vs Ozempic: Same Drug, Different Purpose?

After March 20, 2026, Ozempic is suddenly everywhere. Not because it was new, but because its patent status changed, and with that, the conversation got louder. More people started asking the same question. What exactly is Ozempic, and can it really help with weight loss?

1. 0.25 mg once weekly as initiation dose 
2. 0.5 mg once weekly after initial period 
3. 1 mg if additional blood sugar control is needed 
4. 2 mg to further control blood sugar 

As mentioned, Ozempic is approved by US-FDA for Type 2 diabetes mellitus, but can it help for weight loss? The answer is “yes” although it’s not officially approved for the purpose.

What Wegovy is Used for ? 

Ozempic gained attention when diabetic people consistently experienced weight loss during its use. As evidence grew, Novo Nordisk introduced Wegovy, a higher dose version of same drug designed specifically for weight management. 

Wegovy was introduced in 2021 and is expected to be under patent till 2031. It is specifically approved by the US FDA for following indications: 

1. For adults with a BMI ≥ 30 (obesity)
2. For adults with BMI ≥ 27 plus conditions like high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol
3. For long term weight management in children aged 12+ with obesity Helps reduce risk of serious heart events like heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death in adults with heart disease and overweight or obesity

Wegovy comes as a pre-filled injection pen and is available in the following dose:

1. 0.25 mg once weekly for the first 4 weeks.  
2.  0.5 mg for weeks 5 to 8 weeks 
3.  1 mg for weeks 9 to 12 weeks 
4.  1.7 mg for weeks 13 to 16 weeks   
5. 2.4 mg once weekly as maintenance dose from week 17 onwards

So while the molecule remains the same, the purpose, dosing, and approvals are what clearly separate Wegovy from Ozempic.

How Ozempic and Wegovy Works?

Both medications contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide, and works in following ways: 

1- Diabetes:

Is Ozempic Safe?
