composition
This is the combination of two antibiotics drug ie. cefuroxime 500 mg + clavulanic acid 125 mg
workings
Cefuroxime is a cephalosporin antibiotic that works by inhibiting the bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, which results in the inhibition of the third and last stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis. This ultimately leads to the bacterial cell death.
Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Beta-lactamase is an enzyme produced by certain bacteria that can break down beta-lactam antibiotics (such as penicillins and cephalosporins) and make them ineffective. Clavulanic acid binds to beta-lactamase and inactivates it, allowing cefuroxime to work against bacteria that would otherwise be resistant to it.
When cefuroxime and clavulanic acid are combined, the cefuroxime can effectively kill a wider range of bacteria, including those that produce beta-lactamase. This combination makes the antibiotic more effective against a wider range of infections.
