directions
Ethinylestradiol 0.03 mg + levonorgestrel 0.15 mg is a combination hormonal contraceptive pill commonly known as "the pill". It contains two synthetic hormones - ethinylestradiol (an estrogen) and levonorgestrel (a progestin) - that work together to prevent pregnancy.
The pack typically contains 21 tablets, which are taken orally once a day for 21 consecutive days. After taking the last pill, there is a 7-day break where no pills are taken, during which a woman will usually experience a withdrawal bleed similar to a period. It is important to start the next pack of pills on time, even if bleeding has not stopped, to maintain contraceptive effectiveness.
Ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel work together by suppressing ovulation, preventing the release of an egg from the ovaries. The hormones also thicken the cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to reach and fertilize an egg, and thin the lining of the uterus, making it less hospitable for implantation of a fertilized egg.
This combination pill is highly effective when taken correctly, with a failure rate of less than 1% with perfect use. However, like all hormonal contraceptives, it does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
