How Dosulepin works
Dosulepin works by increasing the level of two important brain chemicals- noradrenaline and serotonin. It works by blocking the parts of the brain that usually removes them. This means more of these mood-lifting chemicals stay in the brain. A metabolite of dosulepin called northiaden does an even better job of keeping noradrenaline in the brain. Dosulepin also affects other brain systems. It blocks α2 receptors, which allows more noradrenaline to be released, and it reduces the number of β-receptors, which lowers the brain’s response to stress. It blocks serotonin receptors called 5HT1A and 5HT2A- this helps control mood and may also improve sleep. Dosulepin can cause side effects like dry mouth by blocking muscarinic receptors, and it makes people feel sleepy by blocking histamine (H1) receptors.
