Carbimazole is an antithyroid medication used to treat hyperthyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone. It works by reducing the amount of thyroid hormone produced by the thyroid gland.
Carbimazole tablets are available in different strengths, including 10 mg tablets. The 10 mg tablets are small, round, white, and marked with "CMZ 10" on one side and a break line on the other. The tablets are usually packaged in a blister pack of 100 tablets.
Carbimazole is usually taken orally, and the dose will vary depending on the severity of hyperthyroidism and the patient's response to treatment. It is usually taken two or three times a day after meals. The tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and should not be crushed or chewed.
Like all medications, carbimazole can cause side effects. The most common side effects include rash, itching, and gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. Rare but serious side effects include liver problems and a decrease in the number of white blood cells. If any of these side effects occur, patients should contact their doctor immediately.
