Ceftriaxone is an injectable antibiotic belonging to the cephalosporin (third generation) group. It is used to treat serious bacterial infections such as:
Ceftriaxone works by stopping bacteria from building their protective skin (called the cell wall). Without this strong wall, the bacteria become weak and cannot survive, so they die. This helps clear the infection from the body. That’s why Ceftriaxone is effective against many serious bacterial infections and is commonly used in hospitals.
📌 Allergy/Hypercreativity
If you are allergic to ceftriaxone, inform your doctor before taking this medicine, as it can cause severe rashes, swelling, breathing problems, or serious allergic reactions.
📌 Newborn Babies (Especially with Jaundice)
Ceftriaxone should not be used in newborns with jaundice, as it can worsen bilirubin levels and affect the brain.
📌 Liver or Kidney Problems
If you have liver or kidney disease, inform your doctor. The medicine may build up in your body, increasing the risk of side effects, so dose adjustment and monitoring are needed.
📌 Gallbladder Problems
Tell your doctor if you have any gallbladder issues. Ceftriaxone can sometimes cause gallbladder sludge or stomach pain, especially with prolonged use.
📌 Pregnancy
If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, inform your doctor. Ceftriaxone is used only if clearly needed, as it may pose risks to the fetus.
📌 Breastfeeding
If you are breastfeeding, speak to your doctor first. The medicine may pass into breast milk and could affect the baby.
Avoid taking Ceftriaxone with the following medicines, as it may increase or decrease the desired effect, or in worse cases, it could be fatal:
Ceftriaxone is given by injection, so food does not affect how it works. You can eat your normal meals during treatment. It’s best to drink enough fluids, especially if you feel weak or unwell. Avoid alcohol unless your doctor allows it, as alcohol may increase stomach upset and strain the liver.
IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry)/ Chemical name
Ceftriaxone: (6R,7R)-7-[[(2Z)-2-(2-amino-1,3-thiazol-4-yl)-2-methoxyiminoacetyl]amino]-3-[(2-methyl-5,6-dioxo-1H-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)sulfanylmethyl]-8-oxo-5-thia-1-azabicyclo[4.2.0]oct-2-ene-2-carboxylic acid

📌 Daily Dose
Take Ceftriaxone exactly as your doctor recommends. The dose may change based on your condition and how well you respond. Do not take more than prescribed without consulting your doctor.
📌 Missed Dose
If you forget to take your medicine, take the medication as soon as you remember. If it’s nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule. Always consult the doctor before making any changes to your dosage.
📌 Overdose
It is not recommended to take more than 4 grams per day ceftriaxone, as it may cause severe overdose symptoms like nausea, vomiting, headache, tremors, restlessness, and rapid heartbeat. Seek medical attention in case of any serious reactions.
Ceftriaxone 2000 mg injection is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat pneumonia, blood infection and infections in the urinary tract, abdomen, skin/soft-tissue, bone and joint, and typhoid. It works by stopping bacteria from forming their protective o skin (cell wall), which makes the germs weak and causes them to die. Common side effects include injection-site pain, nausea, diarrhea, rash, headache, and temporary changes in liver or blood tests, while rare but serious effects are severe allergy, persistent diarrhea, gallbladder sludge, kidney problems, or low blood counts. It should be avoided or used carefully in people with ceftriaxone allergy, severe penicillin allergy history, newborns with jaundice, liver or kidney disease, gallbladder problems, and during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless advised by a doctor. Since it’s given by injection, food does not affect it, but staying well hydrated is helpful and alcohol should be avoided unless permitted by your doctor.
➡️ Ceftriaxone works by killing bacteria. It does this by blocking the bacteria’s cell wall formation, which weakens the bacteria and causes them to burst and die. This makes it effective in treating a wide range of serious bacterial infections.
➡️ Ceftriaxone should not be used in people who are allergic to ceftriaxone, other cephalosporins, or penicillin, as it can cause serious allergic reactions like rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing. It should also be used with caution in patients with severe kidney or liver problems, bleeding disorders, or a history of severe diarrhea from antibiotics, and only under a doctor’s supervision.
➡️ Ceftriaxone belongs to the third-generation cephalosporin class of antibiotics.
