Gabapentin Summary

Gabapentin is a gamma amino butyric acid analog, which means it has a similar structure to GABA, which is a chemical that calms the nerve signals. It is a medication used mainly to manage nerve-related problems like nerve pain after herpes, diabetic nerve pain, fibromyalgia, and as an additional treatment for seizures in epilepsy. It works by calming overactive nerves rather than acting as a traditional painkiller. It may also be prescribed by doctors for restless legs syndrome or certain sleep disturbances linked to nerve issues. Most people find gabapentin helpful in improving daily comfort and sleep by reducing nerve pain intensity.

Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, and unsteady movements; some people may notice swelling in the hands or feet or mild mood changes. Serious side effects, such as breathing issues, are rare but more likely in older adults or when used with sedatives or alcohol. It’s important not to stop this medication suddenly, as that may worsen symptoms or cause withdrawal effects.

How Gabapentin works

Gabapentin works by increasing levels of gamma amino butyric acid (GABA), a chemical released in the brain to calm the excitations in the brain cells. Normally in conditions like epilepsy, there is an excessive production of glutamate, which causes excitation of brain cells. When this gabapentin is given to patients, it will bind to protein gates called gamma-aminobutyric acid receptors and increases the level of GABA. The gamma-aminobutyric acid will suppress the glutamate, leading to calmness. In this way it calms the excess triggers of seizures.
